Strobist Photography Techniques - Off Camera Flash Photography Tutorial
Emma: Hi, I’m Emma and I’m your model today. Your host, Ron Sullivan is going to show you how to do off camera flash in the studio.
Ron: Today’s shoot is going to be quite simple. We’re going to use an off camera flash setup. As you can see from the diagram, the flash is on a 45 degree angle to the model. We’re using a flash that is Nikon compatible. But, it’s a no name flash. Name of Newer, you can find on Amazon for under $50-60. Works great, compared to a Nikon flash for $500. Don’t know if I’d use it on a commercial job, but again, if you’re just starting out in photography and you’re trying to keep your costs down, take a look at it on Amazon. It seems to work pretty good. I’ve tried it a few times.
The next thing to trigger the flashes, or the flash, I’m using a Cactus wireless remote that I’ve been using for several years, mostly in studio. And, I actually started using it with the Newer flash and it seems to work pretty good.
As you can see from the video here, I’ve got Emma, our model, basically sitting on a chair. I’ve got the Cactus remote on a stand. And, I’ve got the $50 flash just pointing directly at her. Since we’re not using a softbox with the flash, I decided to take just one of our cheap reflectors that we had in the studio- I had an assistant working with me that day, and she basically held the reflector in front of the flash just to defuse the flash so the intensity was not as much. It softened the light down a little bit, very much like a softbox.
Now, we’ve over exaggerated the view of the reflector in the image. Obviously, we can’t block the camera from the model with the big reflector. But, I just, again, wanted to show how you can get creative with a cheap, inexpensive flash and a cheap inexpensive reflector, and almost replicate a softbox in a studio for less than, maybe, $100. As opposed to going out and buying an expensive studio strobe and a softbox. I mean, that could easily set you back $500-1000, depending on what you buy.
Okay, here are the finished images from the shoot today, using the one flash setup. As you can see, we got a really nice exposure. I touched these up a little bit in Photoshop- just ran a skin softener on the skin, I put a little bit more punch in the eyes just to make them pop a little bit more, that’s about it. That’s all I did on these three images. And, you can see, I got spectacular results from less than $100.
That’s the whole goal of these What’s Up in Photography videos. I want to be able to show you how you can create amazing images without having to spend thousands of dollars. There are work arounds and things that you can do in your own home, your basement, your classroom— You can even do it outside. You don’t need a lot of money to take great images. You just have to know some basic techniques. This is one basic technique that I showed you today.
